Muhith, Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations, has been elected as a member of the ICSC

Mohammad Abdul Muhith, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, was elected as a member of the prestigious International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) in a highly contested election held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday (08 November 2024). He will serve as a member of ICSC for 4 years from 2025 to 2028.

Three candidates from Bangladesh, China and South Korea vied for the two vacant seats earmarked for the Asia-Pacific region. Among them, the candidates of Bangladesh and China won the election.

After being elected, Ambassador Muhith said that this victory of Bangladesh is a recognition of the trust and faith of the United Nations member states in Bangladesh 2.0 under the competent leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and the active role and contribution of Bangladesh in the United Nations. The ICSC is a 15-member independent commission of experts established by the United Nations General Assembly. The commission makes decisions and recommendations on various issues such as human resource management, compensation, staff availability, etc. of the United Nations.

It may be noted that a professional diplomat, Ambassador Muhith joined the United Nations as a permanent representative of Bangladesh in July 2022. He currently serves as the Chair of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) of the UN General Assembly as well as the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS for the year 2024.

Besides, he also served as Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022, Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2023, President of the Executive Board of UN-Women in 2022 and Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS in 2023.
