Chittagong Hill Tracts Adviser Supradeep Chakma said Kaptai Lake is one of the country’s fish reserves. The livelihood of the people here is connected with Kaptai Lake. However, due to accumulation of silt in Kaptai Lake, the depth of the lake has decreased a lot. Therefore, dredging of Kaptai Lake is necessary to protect the fishery resources of this region. He also said that the government will continue all efforts to identify and solve the problems of Chittagong Hill Tracts including dredging of Kaptai Lake, development of tourism industry.
The adviser said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the discussion meeting with the stakeholders on the development of fisheries resources of Kaptai Lake of the district organized by the district administration at the Rangamati District Commissioner’s conference room on Sunday (November 10, 2024).
Hill Tracts Adviser Supradeep Chakma also said that since 1960, Kaptai Dam was the cause of suffering for the people of this area. But the income from this Kaptai lake is now four thousand crores. The advisor said that it is possible to increase this amount of income. A multi-purpose income generation project can be undertaken by building a dam with the soil of Kaptai lake dredging.
The advisor said, the flow of water cannot be stopped in any way. Water must be increased to increase fish production and human life and livelihood.
Karnaphuli Hydro Power Plant Manager ATM Abduzzaheh, Tourism Corporation Manager Alok Vikash Chakma, District Fishery Traders Association President Md. Harunur Rashid, Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Vice Chairman Ripon Chakma, District Police Superintendent SM Farhad Hossain, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Ruhul Amin, Additional District Magistrate Zobaida Akhtar, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Kankan Chakma was present in the exchange meeting held under the chairmanship of Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan.
At the beginning of the meeting, Rangamati BFDC Managing Commander Commander Md. Ashraful Islam Bhuiya and Water Development Board Executive Engineer Tayan Kumar Tripura gave separate presentations on Kaptai Lake.
Local fishermen, fish traders, representatives of various public and private organizations, journalists and dignitaries were present in the exchange meeting.
