We should work for the development and interest of the common farmer

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that the Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority should work not only for the interests of the officers and employees of the organization, but also for the development and interests of the common farmers. Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority has more opportunities for their work as they play an important role in the agricultural production and development of Barendra region.

The advisor said these things in his speech as the chief guest at an exchange meeting with farmers at Sarmangla Ecopark in Godagari Upazila of Rajshahi on Sunday (October 20, 2024 AD).

In the discussion meeting, the farmers said that Rajshahi has enough cold storage or storage for potatoes. But there is no cold storage for storing seed potatoes. They also said that due to low pH in the soil and high acidity in the soil, crop production is decreasing. The farmers drew the attention of the adviser to solve this problem.

In this regard, the adviser said, the government is constructing non-refrigerated model houses at a cost of two and a half lakh taka for storing potatoes of small and medium farmers through the Department of Agriculture Marketing. In addition, the government has imported improved potato seeds from the Netherlands to increase potato production. He also said that everyone should be careful not to increase the price of potato seeds. Besides, he directed Barendra Development Authority to study and take necessary measures to solve the problem of low pH and high acidity of the soil.

In the exchange meeting, the advisors inquired about the farmers and advised the farmers on profitable crop production and crop diversification. The advisor earlier inspected the water transmission project from Padma River to Saramangla Creek by underground pipe line.

Besides, he released fish fry in Sarmangla creek and planted blackstone mango saplings in Sarmangla Ecopark. Later he visited Kalipur Irrigation System operated by Barendra Development Authority. Chairman of Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority during the visit. M. Asaduzzaman and Executive Director Md. Shafiqul Islam were present.
