Farooq E Azam, Adviser on Disaster Management and Relief, Bir Prateek said that all the people who lost their houses due to severe floods in Sherpur district, the government will build their houses and permanent dams will be constructed to deal with the floods. On Friday (October 18, 2024 AD), the adviser said all this while visiting the flood-affected areas of Ramerkura, Brijpara and Nalkura villages of Sadar Union of Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur District and distributing relief to the flood victims.
The relief adviser said that during the current monsoon season, there has been severe flooding in various districts of the country including Sherpur. It caused a lot of damage to property. Full details of the damage have been sent to the government from the concerned district administration. A committee has been constituted centrally by the government to strengthen the rehabilitation program. This committee has also been formed at the district and upazila levels. It is hoped that by assessing the extent of the damage caused by the flood, it will be possible to rehabilitate the affected people through concerted efforts.
Adviser Farooq E Azam said that the officials and engineers of the Ministry of Water Resources will look into the matter while agreeing to build a permanent dam on the Maharshi river. However, construction of a permanent dam on the Maharshi river is necessary to reduce the calamity and damage. The Interim Government will do as much as possible in this regard.
The adviser distributed different types of food items to 45 families affected by landslides and floods in Jhenaigati upazila and 100 bundles of cotton and cash assistance to 50 families.
At this time, Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman and officials of various departments of the district were present. Later, the adviser held a meeting with the district level officials on the flood situation and rehabilitation activities of the district at the Mymensingh Circuit House auditorium.
