Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Nahid Islam said, A ‘Media Reform Commission’ will be formed based on consultation with stakeholders. Mentioning that the salary of journalists should be confirmed along with the wage board, the advisor said, there is no opportunity for slavish behavior with journalists. All issues are being reviewed as to why journalists cannot act professionally. Mentioning that media literacy has not developed in the country, he said, the culture of professionalism in the media is absent in Bangladesh. For this, it will be worked on the basis of consensus by discussing with the participants. Journalist organizations have an important role in this regard. Referring to the recent student uprising, the advisor said, this coup is a big case study for the media. The role of media in this coup must be closely reviewed. During the movement, many journalists gathered news at the field level; But due to media house policy that news would not be published. The people of the country know what the electronic media has propagated during the student movement. There was no institutional resistance to journalists in this coup. Calling the professionalism of journalists important for free media, he said, In the days to come, besides ensuring the professionalism of journalists, youth should be interested in this profession. The Information and Broadcasting Adviser also emphasized on reforming the state media. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam spoke among others in the open discussion, Press Institute Bangladesh Director General Farooq Wasif, Dhaka University’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism teacher Dr. Saiful Alam Chowdhury and others.
