Biden warns energy giants against gas price hikes as Hurricane Ian slams Florida

President Biden warns gas companies to not price gouge amid Hurricane Ian.

WASHINGTON, Broadcasting news corporation : With Hurricane Ian barreling into Florida, President Biden on Wednesday took a shot at oil companies, warning them not to increase gas prices and warning that his administration won’t tolerate “gouging.” After asking Florida residents to obey safety warnings as the storm moves ashore, the president said: “I want to add one more warning, a warning to the oil and gas industry executives: Do not — let me repeat, do not — do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people.” Biden added the powerful Category 4 hurricane was poised to disrupt domestic oil production only “for a very short period of time.” “This small temporary storm impact on oil production provides no excuse, no excuse for price increases at the pump. None,” the president went on during a nutrition-focused event in Washington. “If gas companies try to use this storm to raise prices at the pump, I will ask officials will look into whether price gouging is going on. Americans are watching and the industry should do the right thing.” Despite Biden directing his harsh words to energy executives, most Americans buy their gas directly from small business owners. According to the National Association of Convenience Stores, 54.6% of the more than 116,000 locations that sell gas nationwide are run by one-store operators. In Florida, where the storm made landfall Wednesday afternoon, the organization said that 4,032 of the 7,349 locations selling gas have one-store operators. In all, convenience stores sell approximately 80% of fuel purchased in the US, according to NACS. “Right now, station owners are focused on having an adequate supply for everyone in a very difficult situation,” NACS Vice President of Strategic Industry Initiatives Jeff Lenard told The Post in response to the president’s comments. “They are focused on serving their customers and not pointing fingers.” A spokesperson for the American Petroleum Institute, the largest trade association representing the oil and natural gas industry, pointed out that repeated investigations by federal and state officials have found that market forces have been the cause of gas price hikes rather than illegal activity. “In an unfolding weather event, our industry is focused on keeping the energy market well-supplied and delivering fuels where they are needed most while ensuring the safety of our workforce,” the institute said in a statement. “Gasoline prices are determined by market forces – not individual companies – and claims that the price at the pump is anything but a function of supply and demand are false.” High gas prices are bad news politically for whoever holds power in DC — and Biden added that prices should in fact be lowered. “They should move more quickly now to bring down the price at the pump,” he said. “There’s too much of a delay. between the price of a barrel of gas … oil and the price of gasoline at the pump.” As of Wednesday, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas stood at $3.77 in the US, according to AAA data — down from an all-time high of more than $5 in June, but still higher than the average of $3.19 one year ago. The surge in gas prices earlier this year contributed to a sour public mood and drooping approval ratings for Biden ahead of the November midterm elections. Biden in June asked Congress to temporarily waive the federal gas tax of 18.3 cents per gallon, but was rebuffed by members of both parties. In an attempt to increase oil supplies, Biden in March ordered the release of a million barrels per day from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and allowed a higher proportion of ethanol in gas over the summer.
Biden has also blamed surging gas prices on Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine and COVID-19 supply chain bottlenecks. Republican critics have said Biden’s own actions contributed to the crunch. Biden last year attempted to impose a moratorium on new oil drilling on public lands and suspended drilling permits at Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He also spiked the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada into the US.
As gas prices hammered his popularity, Biden sought to turn the tables on oil companies, slamming them for raking in “well above normal” profits. Biden urged the firms to drill more on existing leases and to boost refining capacity while also urging individual gas stations to cut prices at the pump. NEWS COLLECTED FROM NEW YORK POST.
