WASHINGTON, Broadcasting news corporation : Responding to President Biden’s Labor Day speech ripping former President Donald Trump and his supporters, the GOP mocked the low turnout at his rally for union steelworkers near Pittsburgh. “MASSIVE crowd for Joe Biden in Pennsylvania today!,” the Republican National Committee Research account tweeted Monday, adding two laughing emojis. The posting included a photo showing Biden on the stage outside a union hall in West Mifflin, southeast of the Steel City, ​speaking before a crowd of a few dozen people.​ The photo on the RNC Research Twitter showed the same scant gathering as photos from news services and reporters covering the event. One picture, posted online by Molly Nagle of ABC News, showed Biden​, 79,​ speaking in shirtsleeves in front of the United Steelworkers of America Local Union 2227 hall. Other Twitter users noted the low turnout, with one asking NBC News reporter Kelly O’Donnell: “Biden in Pittsburgh. Same speech he gave in Wisconsin, much less energy. Why? Where is the crowd in Pittsburgh? Where’s the turnout?” Another user attempted to provide an answer, suggesting: “Biden Labor Day speech in Pennsylvania was open to union members only. Turnout about 100, maybe 150? Spending Labor Day at a Democrats rally – probably sounded as appealing as going to a crochet class.” Biden’s Labor Day speech in West Mifflin marked his third appearance in Pennsylvania in less than a week. In the president’s two speeches in the Keystone State last week — one in Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday and a second in Philadelphia on Thursday — he bashed the 45th president and his Make America Great Again movement as a threat to American democracy.
“And so, folks, look, we have a choice. Trump and the MAGA Republicans made their choice. We can choose to build a better America or we can continue down this sliding path of oblivion to where we don’t want to go,” Biden said Monday. At his “battle for the soul of the nation” address in front of Independence Hall last week, Biden said the country is at an “inflection point.”​ ​”And now America must choose: to move forward or to move backwards? To build the future or obsess about the past? To be a nation of hope and unity and optimism, or a nation of fear, division, and of darkness?​,” he said. ​“MAGA Republicans have made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies.​” Biden’s remarks about Trump’s MAGA supporters came after he likened the political movement to “semi-fascism” during a speech last month in Maryland. Trump held his own rally in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, his first public comments since the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago home on Aug. 8 in search of classified documents, and responded to Biden’s Philadelphia speech. “Joe Biden came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania​,​ to give the most vicious, hateful and divisive speech ever delivered by an American president.​ … He’s an enemy of the state,” ​the former commander-in-chief said.
