WASHINGTON, Broadcasting news corporation : President Biden’s “body man” has decided to quit his White House role after more than three years of serving as Biden’s personal assistant. Stephen Goepfert will leave his current position at the end of this week to take a new role with the Department of Transportation, the White House confirmed Tuesday. “From the campaign to the White House, Stephen Goepfert has been by my side,” Biden said in a statement. “In moments big, small, and extraordinary, he’s been a trusted and loyal confidant who everyone counts on and who always delivers. “Jill and I will miss Stephen, but we’re proud that he will continue to serve the American people in his new role in the Biden-Harris administration as he continues his career in public service.” Goepfert — the first openly gay presidential body man — started working as Biden’s personal aide in 2019 during the presidential campaign. Prior to that role, Goepfert also worked in Biden’s circle when he was a senior adviser to the then-vice president’s chief of staff, Steve Ricchetti. Goepfert is being replaced by Jacob Spreyer, the official White House receptionist. His leaving the administration marks the latest in a string of departures across Biden’s team, the vice president’s office and the press office. This summer, the White House press team saw several members — Mike Gwin, Vedant Patel and Amanda Finney — leave for other administration positions. In May, press secretary Jen Psaki also left, trading in the briefing room for the MSNBC studio. Additionally, communications director Kate Bedingfield was set to leave the administration to spend more time with her family — but in July, she abruptly announced she would not be leaving the role.
Over the past year, Vice President Kamala Harris’ office has also seen more than a dozen top aides leaving. Meanwhile, Biden has only been subject to a few, notably losing senior communications director Mariel Saez in February. Meanwhile, more than 20 African American staffers have reportedly departed the White House since late last year in an exodus dubbed “Blaxit.” Despite concerns, the White House has repeatedly brushed off the departures as a natural part of the first few years of any new administration.
