Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said the government will take long-term measures to conserve elephants. Under the short-term program, initiatives will be taken to improve elephant natural habitat, safe breeding, ensuring food security, elephant population assessment and research, and use of modern technology to resolve human-elephant conflict. Besides, public awareness raising activities on elephant conservation will be strengthened. This program will be implemented in some districts of Chittagong, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions where elephants live.
The adviser said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the elephant conservation project meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (October 17, 2024 AD). In the meeting, he emphasized on various initiatives of the government to protect elephants and balance the environment.
The Environment Advisor said, under this special program implemented by the Forest Department, several activities will be undertaken, including the creation of plantations of trees suitable for food for elephants, excavation of reservoirs and construction of solar-powered fences in vulnerable areas.
Apart from this, there are also plans to build biofencing to reduce elephant-human conflict, establish elephant response teams and construct towers for elephant monitoring. He said that conservation of elephants is important to protect biodiversity of the country. If this program is successfully implemented, it will be possible to sustain the existence of elephants along with the protection of human life and property.
