Haluaghat, Dhobaura and Phulpur upazilas of Mymensingh are showing signs of damage as the flood water recedes. Agriculture and fisheries sectors have suffered the most. According to the sources of the concerned departments, there has been a loss of about 400 crore taka in these two sectors. Meanwhile, the affected farmers said that it is not possible for them to turn around without the government’s support in this post-flood situation.
Abdul Khalek is a farmer from Darsha village of Haluaghat upazila. A sudden flood washed away his Aman paddy seedlings. However, when the water decreases, the grass has already rotted. He said, My farm was under water for seven days continuously. All the crops have rotted. All my dreams are now floating in the water.
40 acres of fish and 150 acres of paddy land of farmer Kabir Sarwar Sujon of Daumghata village in Baghber union of Dhobaura upazila were submerged in the flood. He said, I have to fall into a terrible situation that I could never imagine. If the government does not cooperate, it is not possible to turn around in any way.
Farmer Nurul Amin of Sinheshwar village of Phulpur upazila said, I planted Aman paddy on 20 kata land. 600 rupees have been spent on each katha. And after a month the paddy would start ripening. But all ended with the flood. I want the help of the government.
According to the information of the District Agriculture Extension Directorate and the District Fisheries Office, 31 thousand 680 hectares of Aman paddy in three upazilas have been destroyed by floods recently. It caused a financial loss of about 313 crore 18 lakh taka. 4 thousand 465 tons of fish from 14 thousand 946 ponds were washed away in 26 unions of three upazilas.
Its financial loss amount is 77 crore 68 lakh taka. 2 crore 12 million fish fry were washed away. Its financial loss is Tk 4 crore 25 lakh. Apart from this, infrastructure damage has been done to the tune of Tk 2 crore 35 lakh.
Mymensingh Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department. Nashrin Akhter Banu said that the flood has caused a lot of damage to the farmers. Many cultivate crops with loans including loans.
Hence an appeal has been made to the higher authorities for the assistance of the affected farmers.
Mymensingh District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Nazim Uddin said that three upazilas were flooded on October 4 due to continuous rain and landslides. This causes huge losses in the fisheries sector. We have already sent an application to the ministry asking for assistance in determining the extent of the damage.
