Fishermen suffer extreme discrimination: Adviser Farida Akhtar

Referring to the extreme disparity between fishermen and fisheries, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar said, After the bloody anti-discrimination movement of students-people-workers in July and August, the government is doing its best to eliminate the discrimination between fishermen and fish traders. The advisor said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the seminar on Challenges and Forward-Rights of Small-Scale Fishing Communities: The Context of Bangladesh at Sirdap Auditorium on Saturday (09 November 2024 AD).

Fisheries and Livestock Adviser said that those who make a living by catching fish are the real fishermen. Businessmen cannot be included in this case. Referring to the wage disparity among fishermen, he said, recognition of women fishermen should be strongly supported – they cannot be discriminated against other fishermen. Fishermen will no longer be poor if facilities are provided. The advisor said, if we can really use marine fisheries, then Bangladesh will not be poor anymore.

If we consider only the fish resources, it can be seen that many species of this huge species have not yet reached our collection. Even, we do not have advanced vessels capable of deep sea fishing.
We don’t know how many species of fisheries we actually have, what their stocks are like. The government is trying to work on this issue by bringing its own vessels. For this reason, he urged renowned scientists to come forward for the sake of the country.
