The government is determined to set an example in pollution control

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Water Resources, said the government is determined to set an example in controlling air, noise, plastic and river pollution. Government efforts are continuing to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the people. Besides, referring to the current implementation of polythene bag ban, he said the management plan may also be updated if necessary to meet the emerging challenges.

The Environment Advisor said these things during a meeting with Netherlands Ambassador Irma Van Duren at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (October 22, 2024). In the meeting, the strengthening of cooperation with the Netherlands in the field of environmental protection, water resources management and pollution control of Bangladesh was discussed. Both sides discussed ongoing initiatives to combat climate change and environmental degradation and possible future cooperation.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the importance of local people’s participation in environment conservation especially river protection. She said rivers are the backbone of our biodiversity and active participation of local people is essential in any sustainable cleaning initiative.

Ambassador Irma van Doeren informed about the readiness of the Netherlands to assist Bangladesh in combating climate change and improving water resource management. Both sides concluded the meeting by expressing hope for more cooperation in the field of environmental protection and water resource management in the future. Netherlands’ experience in water management and Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable development are considered strong bases for cooperation.

Environment Secretary, Water Resources Secretary, Director General of Bangladesh Water Development Board and senior officials of the embassy were present during the meeting.
